Have you ever taken your car in for an oil change or tire rotation, only to be told that your battery is weak, the transmission fluid is leaking, and your brakes are shot? My reaction is to roll my eyes and assume I’m the easy mark.
Whether I approve the work or not depends on how convinced I am of the immediate need to fix what’s broken (and my ability to cover the repairs). The last time this happened I ended up buying a new car. It was that bad.
We had a similar experience recently with a group who went through our writeTrain® program. The client approached us with a persistent problem they were having across the board: a specific document that needs to be spot-on in content and format was missing the mark, often profoundly.
With so many staff members responsible for preparing this type of document the client sought several remedies, one of which was writeTrain. We provided a unique solution. This included customizing writing sample exercises, where learners prepared the required document, using the typical information they would be normally be given.
Our writing coach (a highly qualified writing expert) was deeply involved in the project. She knew what an ideal document should contain, as well as its preferred tone and style. Along with the sample writings, this group completed the entire writeTrain® program, which covers document formatting, style and tone, grammar mechanics as well as a comprehensive writing process.
Overall, this session was a resounding success and produced the desired outcome. The surprise was that learners entered the program looking to check one problem (i. e., the need for an oil change) but discovered other areas where their writing needed tuning up:
16 of 19 PROOFREADING ERRORS
12 of 19 STYLE
6 of 19 SPECULATING OR CHANGING MEANING OF INFORMATION
6 of 19 INACCURATE TRANSCRIPTION OF INFORMATION
5 of 19 GRAMMAR AND MECHANICS
5 of 19 ILLOGICAL ORGANIZATION
(The factors listed are general categories; detailed explanations are provided to the learners.)
In this case, learners got more than they thought they needed because the writeTrain® program addresses foundation writing requirements, while making sure they had a firm grasp on how to properly prepare their assignments.
writeTrain® is a very solid writing skills program. At the same time, it can be tailored to meet specific requirements to build your team’s level of precision, accuracy, consistency and effectiveness.
